We were lucky to have the place almost to ourselves and enjoyed two hours of the most amazing cocktail and custom whiskey tasting selection. The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and we really enjoyed ourselves. I can especially recommend the rivera nocturne. The background music and interior design was amazing as well. All in all it was a 12/10 experience, we‘ll definitely be back if we’re ever in Edinburgh again
We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table by the maître d’, which set a lovely tone for the evening. We don’t often dine at restaurants of this quality, so it felt like a real treat. The service was excellent — our drinks were topped up before we even noticed they were running low, and the timing between courses was just right. It was such an enjoyable and relaxing experience, made even better by being a rare child-free night out.
Atmosphere: 8/10 Commons Club sits in a prime spot on Victoria Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town, within the Virgin Hotels Edinburgh building. The interior feels polished and timeless, with tasteful art pieces and elegant finishes. The backbar is impressive and gives the room presence. Seating is mixed—bar stools, couch and table seating, and some shared group tables that create a social, upscale vibe. Music volume is just right, adding energy without overpowering conversation. Drinks: 8.5/10 Recommendation: Caramel Reverie The cocktail menu is solid, with some structure by flavor and style, though it could be broader and more daring. Most drinks are well balanced, with a few that could show more depth. Coasters are high quality, glassware above average, and garnishes thoughtfully designed to complement each drink. Presentation, including ice, is elegant and cohesive. The drinks program is clearly led by an experienced team with high technical standards. Service: 9/10 Water is offered on arrival. While there are no complimentary snacks or towels, the team’s professionalism stands out. Service is friendly, attentive, and polished throughout. Special shoutout to Colin, a cocktail veteran whose skill, composure, and guest intuition elevate the whole experience—an outstanding bartender who defines the bar’s personality. Reservations aren’t needed, and pricing is average for Edinburgh.
Our first visit on a Saturday to the Commons Club was just great. We normally always book for Sunday lunch but wanted to check out the atmosphere on a Saturday and we were not disappointed. We had an itison voucher for a 3 course lunch with fizz and were looking forward to the Roast Beef but alas no , the menu had been changed on Friday so no beef on offer. In a way this was a disappointment but it made us explore the new menu and try new dishes which was good. We had Heritage Tomatoes & Chicken with chilli followed by Roast Loin with salad and a Steak Frittes. For desserts we had one Cranachan and one Chocolate cake with cream. For drinks we had a glass of fizz each and one Pilot Leith Lager. Starters were tasty but difficult to eat the chicken as the new design of bowl wanders all over the table. Mains good also but salad with Roast Loin needs a bit more imagination. Desserts tasty but a bit on the small side. Drinks good also but they are getting too expensive, a can of lager £7, cheapest red wine now £40 a bottle so puts us off a bit. This was a very nice meal however we did miss the Roast Beef and all the trimmings. The atmosphere was great and the staff were brilliant especially when they were having to deal with complaints re the change in menu. The Itison deal does say the menu is subject to change so it was just unfortunate the change was made just before the end of this voucher. Anyway, thanks again for a nice lunch in pleasant surroundings by wonderful staff.
We arrived for lunch which was superb. It was so good we arrived again for dinner! For lunch we had the weekend menu for 19 pounds each ( 2 courses). At dinner we had fantastic food too. The service was amazing especially from the floor manager! Don't miss
